If you guessed the sun, you are right! 90% of our aging is due to sun exposure and the majority of our sun exposure happens before the age of 18. No one knew that baby oil and baking in the sun was bad for your skin in the 70’s and 80’s; a healthy glowing tan was thought to be a sign of health. Little did everyone know, no tan is a good tan – instead, it is a sign of sun damage.
Even today, tanning, whether indoors or out, is still being promoted to young adults as something they should do. In a recent study in New Beauty Magazine, those who watched reality television were 2x more likely to tan, compared to those who didn’t watch reality television. Despite the known negative effects of UV exposure, tanning is still popular with reality TV viewers and this younger demographic.
People are exposed to the sun every day; the only thing that changes is the intensity of the UVA/UVB rays through the varying seasons. Protecting your skin with sunscreen is the only preventative measure to reduce photo damage, wrinkles, freckles, and blotchiness. Having an SPF in you makeup is not enough, you need to wear a sunscreen under your makeup and it should be applied before any moisturizer. Women often to forget to apply sunscreen to their neck and hands which is unfortunate, since these are some of the first areas of the body to show signs of aging.
